pres_fitness.jpgThis past month we completed our hockey unit with challenge games in the middle and upper grades. We were only able to play the two games against other schools for various reasons. During March, depending on the grade level, we will be conentrating on tumbling, fitness, rope skipping, and doing the Presidential Physical Fitness test.

Parents, please review with your child a few safety guidelines:

Take your time

Dont push

One person on the equipment at a time

Follow directions of the teacher or spotter

Use indoor voices

Don't forget to wash your hands after class!

Students in grades 5-8 will need to change for gym class. Appropriate tops and shorts will be required for participation. Don't forget to bring a lock for your gym locker. Students in lower grades should avoid wearing skirts or dresses. Sweat pants work well, whereas very long pants of any type do interfere with the mat activities!

hockey_pucks.jpgWe started January with hockey and skiing. Hockey will continue in February for a few weeks since we will miss several days due to end of the quarter and skiing. No shoes...no play.

The 8th Grade students might be playing other schools near the end of the month. Currently, we have contacted three schools with only one response. Challenge week will take place during the last week of February.

We ended 2009 with basketball and other low-level ball/hand-eye activities and Color Tag. This month we will start our unit on hockey and ski on Fridays. Please discuss with your child about the various safety guidelines we have in hockey - such as high sticking and "going into the goal box"! Lower grade students will be using the soft plastic sticks.

October Phys Ed News

Friday, 02 October 2009

soccer_ball.jpgSoccer was the main focus for the physical education classes during the month of September. Drills, skills, and lead up games for the lower graders, while the upper graders concentrated on teamwork and games. Grades for soccer are based on effort, participation, COOPERATION, sportsmanship, and skills.

Students also participated in the All-City Cross Country meet at Badger. Woods teams came home with one first place finish; three second place finishes; one third and one fourth grade finish.

In October, the lower graders will start out with "flag tag". We will advance from eye-foot activities to eye-hand activities. Middle and upper grades will begin their football unit – drills, skill work, lead up games, and finally – flag football games.

We will be going outside for gym class – weather permitting. Students should dress for the weather. Sweatshrts and jackets may be appropriate. Parents, please keep in mind that Mondays and Wednesdays are gym days for students in grades 1-4. The 5th-8th graders have gym on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Fridays. Please be aware of what your child is wearing to school. Kids are still wearing sandals, clogs, and dresses to gym class.

Physical Education and Tennis Shoes
Written by Keith Lofy
Monday, 01 September 2008

gym_shoes.jpgAll students will need a pair of gym shoes reserved just for gym use. Gym shoes are meant to be worn in the gym for gym classes. The children will be outside, weather permitting, until the end of October. They will not need their gym shoes at school until that time. Students should dress for the weather. Please avoid sending children to school on gym days in flip flops, sandals, heavy boots, etc.

We will be running, working on soccer drills, lead-up games, and regular games during September and start flag tag and flag football skills and drills in October.

All students in grades 5–8 will need a gym uniform at school. The uniform will consist of: shirt, shorts (or sweat pants), socks, and tennis shoes. These articles should be labeled with the student's name on the inside. Students should bring a lock for their gym locker.
