The Woods School forensic program is in February. The two coaches for this extra-curricular activity are Mrs. Gonzales and Mrs. Crowell.
For those parents not familiar with forensics, it is a public speaking program which affords students the opportunity to perform before their peers at competitions. The students are only competing with themselves — the level of the individual performance. These competitions are called meets.
The middle school program differs from the elementary program and is organized in the following manner:
First, the students select a category, and then they select a piece they want to perform. The categories are listed to the right. Once students' selections are made, a practice schedule is posted for sign-up. The students do most of their selecting and polishing at school — and practice, practice, practice with the two coaches. With forensics, the majority of practices are in the morning before school. Our first practice time is 7:40 A.M. The second time is 8:00 A.M. As coaches we work with the students on blocking, voice inflection, and pace. Each group, as they polish, can then practice alone.
Secondly, as mentioned before, the students perform their work at the meets on the first three Saturdays in February. At these meets, the groups are assigned to perform in one of three rounds throughout the morning.
Please mark these dates on your calendar if your son or daughter is participating. If your child is absent from a meet and is in a group category, his or her entire group cannot participate. If there is a conflict that comes up, please contact Mrs. Crowell or Mrs. Gonzales and perhaps the problem can be solved. If you know ahead of time of a conflict on any of these Saturdays, we ask that you let us know at least four days prior to the Saturday meet so we can try to schedule your child's performance in the first of the three rounds, and then you
can pick him or her up and leave early.
On the morning of our away meets, the entire team will gather at Woods around 7:15 A.M. and a bus will take us to the host school. As a rule the meets are over by 12:30, and we will return to school around 1:30 P.M.
Lunch and snacks are available for purchase at the meets. Usually, the cost is a minimum.
If any parents would like to attend these meets, you are welcome. Just let the coaches know so we can inform you of the protocol in the judging rooms. If we are hosting a meet, you may drop your son or daughter off at LGMS. A meet reminder will always be sent home on the Fridays before each meet with the particulars about time, place, etc.
We know this is a lot of information, and if you have any questions, please call either Mrs. Gonzales or Mrs. Crowell. Again, there will be reminders and more information prior to each meet. Thank-you for your cooperation.
Sincerely,
Mrs. Crowell
Mrs. Gonzales
